INTERMEPA is a shipping industry-led organization of environmental stewards preserving the marine environment in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, Africa, South-East Asia, North & South America and across the seas and the oceans of the world by promoting sustainable marine industry best practices and educating seafarers, students and the public about the need for and ways to protect global ocean, lake and river resources.
Operating as an umbrella organization of non-profit and non-governmental Marine Environment Protection Associations (MEPAs) established in Cyprus (CYMEPA), Greece (HELMEPA), Nigeria (NIMEPA), Philippines (PHILMEPA), Turkey (TURMEPA), Ukraine (UKRMEPA), Uruguay (URUMEPA) and North America (NAMEPA) with similar objectives, the overall aim of INTERMEPA is to raise environmental awareness of the human element in shipping and throughout all sectors of society to achieve their commitment towards marine environment protection, safety at sea and sustainability.
Further, INTERMEPA works to promote the value proposition of the shipping industry to the public, with an emphasis on youth, starting from kindergarten and primary schools and reaching up to high schools and university students through the provision of awareness raising initiatives, educational tools and scholarships.
