Shipping at the Crossroads of Decarbonization

Read the full newsletter here.

With last week’s Intersessional Working Group meeting at IMO, and this week’s MEPC gathering, the shipping industry is, hopefully, at the point of having a definitive goal for decarbonization. In 2018 when the ambition set forward by IMO was for 50% reduction by 2050 it seemed sufficient, but science (and the impacts of climate change) tell us that isn’t good enough. We need net-zero at a minimum by 2050 in order to help mitigate human impacts on the environment.

Shipping shouldn’t bear the full brunt of the costs, however. Governments and customers need to bear their fair share in light of achieving a sustainable solution. Transforming this industry requires a GLOBAL effort, and one that has many moving parts! We are ALL responsible!

As we wait for answers from MEPC, let’s spend some time thinking about our role! How can we play our part in a successful solution? What are we willing to give in order to ensure a healthy ecosystem for the next generations?

For now, let’s cross our fingers the goal is set!!!

Keep optimizing,
Carleen
