The Power of Coming Together

Read the full newsletter here.

Last night I attended the wonderful SUNY Maritime College’s annual Admiral’s Dinner.  Overlooking Manhattan on Long Island Sound, the event honored Kevin Collins of MCA Associates, Boriana Farrer of Patriot Contract Services, and WISTA USA.  There were nearly 1000 in attendance—and did it ever feel great!!!

It has been two and a half years since our maritime community came together comfortably.  Last night was a prime example of the importance of seeing people face to face.  In the first 15 minutes, I was able to recruit a new Board member for one of my endeavors, garner a band, vocalists, and a color guard for another, and two speakers for SHIPPINGInsight. There were pockets of conversation everywhere that were animated and, I am sure, equally productive.

I also bore witness to the camaraderie in our industry; as each of the honorees were introduced, the room swelled with support and ovations.  Don’t you miss that sense of community???

Another benefit of in-person engagement is you tend to hear things you didn’t know—and act on them!  For instance, I learned that SUNY students working to earn their licenses have to pay $15,000 per Sea Term—and they need three for a total of $45,000!  I’m not sure I know of any other profession where you need to pay such an amount to get the required sea time to sit for a license?

It was my pleasure to be seated next to a truly bright spark who has wanted to be a pilot since she was 12.  She is truly passionate about this pursuit!  When I introduced her to the Sandy Hook Pilots and Captain Robert Cook of the Delaware Pilots, she was star-struck!  These are her heroes, and she wants to be amongst them.  It was truly inspirational!

Below you will read Martin Crawford Brunt’s call for collaboration in our industry.  What is the best way to develop that???  You guessed it—face to face!

These are just some of the reasons why you should register TODAY FOR SHIPPINGInsight 2022!  Do it now, so you can experience the successes and the power of coming together!

Keep optimizing,
Carleen
