SHIPPINGInsight ended its three-day conference facing the benefits of innovation, along with the reality of…

Shipping is Changing. . . but is it Innovating?
I had the pleasure yesterday of meeting with Dr. Zoran Perunovic, Director of Executive Education at Rice University in Houston. Dr. Perunovic is a technical scholar who has spent a lot of time studying the state of change in industry, including shipping.
Dr. Perunovic believes there are four stages of innovation that range from existing to new, encompassing Product/Technology as it relates to markets and relationships:
- Incremental innovation—i.e. digitalization
- Radical innovation- blockchain, AI, autonomous
- Architectural- substantially changing the composition
- Disruptive- the UBERs and the Netflix of the world (highest profits and margins)
A question I would pose is: where are we, truly, along the innovation continuum? I think we can agree that we are moving along quite smartly within the incremental space, and there is activity in the radical area. How are we doing in the architectural space, or in the area of disruption?
We need to look at how our industry moves forward. Change is inevitable and accelerating. Are we keeping up? What do we need to do in order to own the process?
These are some of the issues we will be grappling with at SHIPPINGInsight 20/20. We’ll see you there!
Keep optimizing,
Carleen
