A few months ago, the world was riveted by the passion and advocacy of Greta Thunberg – a 15-year-old Swedish girl who risked demerits by skipping school on Fridays to lobby her government about the perils of fossil fuels. Greta is now an icon for zero emissions, and a hero to all ages. Greta has been invited to address the United Nation’s Framework Convention on Climate Change in New York – but how to get there in a carbon – free way? She has announced that she will be using that ancient mode- a sailboat- to travel to the United States. The yacht, Malizia II, is equipped with solar panels and underwater turbines to generate electricity. For safety protocols, the boat carries motors and generators, but they are sealed. By doing this, what is Greta telling us? “Where there is a will, there is a way?”, “Technology exists today to live carbon-free?”, “Carpe diem?”, “There is no time like the present?” “We still have a window of time when things are in our own hands. But that window is closing fast. That is why I have decided to make this trip now,” Greta stated in a New York Times article. We wish her fair winds and following seas. See you in New York, Greta!!!
