Laud and Magnify

In most of these commentaries I entreat the industry to recognize the need to accelerate the transformation of our practices to meet societal demands.  It comes as a breath of fresh air, then, to read how some in our industry are exceeding the aviation industry for digital transformation!  How inspiring to learn that Maersk, Hapag Lloyd and CMA CGM are more digitally mature than their air counterparts?  This is exciting, and I applaud their efforts!

Yes, these are the behemoths of our industry, but they have suffered the same market vagaries as other sectors, yet they chose to invest in making their businesses more efficient through technology.  The question remains:  how does the rest of the industry follow the example of these market leaders?

Right now, it seems as though all the balls are in the air: IMO 2020, GHGs, Ballast Water Treatment, DCS, MRV, communications, digitalization, automation—the list goes on.  Shipowners have a right to feel overwhelmed!  I can only suggest the elephant approach.  You’ve probably heard me use it:  “How do you get an elephant out of the room?  One bite at a time.”

Industry needs to be taking many bites of the elephant.  Where are you starting?

Keep optimizing,

Carleen

2019-02-20 – Maritime is often lambasted for being behind the digital curve but a new benchmarking study shows liners are far ahead of their air cargo peers.  The 18-page report, compiled by freight platform Freightos, looks at digital efforts made by the world’s top 30 air and ocean carriers, who have been surveyed using 26 parameters. In every category, ocean carriers were reported, on average, to be more digitally mature than their air counterparts, the survey found. . . READ MORE
