Slow Steaming Could Be Best Bet for CO2 Reductions

October 18, 2017 — Consultants CE Delft have released a study that shows a simple opportunity for improving international shipping’s fuel efficiency – the familiar cost-saving strategy of slow steaming. The report suggests that a mandatory 30 percent speed reduction would cut shipping’s fuel consumption (and carbon emissions) by as much as a third relative to the base scenario, and would create full employment for the industry’s idled fleet at the same time.  Even better, the study found that the economic impact of longer shipping times would be neglible for exporters. ECDIS systems are ‘not intuitive to use’ – MAIB

October 20, 2017 — The latest accident investigation report from the UK MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch) into the grounding of the bulk carrier Muros in December 2016 has pointed to improper use of ECDIS as a contributory factor to the incident, with the investigators noting that the number of similar incidents it has encountered has led them to the conclusion that previous generations of the technology have not been designed with user needs in mind. Wärtsilä’s asset and lifecycle management agreement lets GasLog concentrate on its core business
